Weekend GetAway # 7 KODAIKANAL : To the Hills

Long time no Weekend Getaway ! Sad all the time I was believing I had written about Kodaikanal.

Being close to Madurai it often came to rescue when we needed a Getaway, handling guests, handling heat, photoshoots(I had my wedding outdoor photoshoots there) even school picnics and college tours! Almost each year at any point I would have visited Kodaikanal.

What is special, well it is the normal hill station with all turns around the hill has some Viewpoint. The climate is cooler at night it is cold, the best part is the cycling around the lake and yes boating.

You need to try these special places

 Berijam Lake.

You need to take the special permission from the forest officer before 8 AM in the morning of the trip and come back by 4 PM. Really a nice place good for photoshoots and nice walk. It is really lovely and scenic.

GUNA CAVE or the Devil’s Kitchen:

Currently shut down permanently, but previously it was a great point of sight and really dangerous one.

Once in 2009 during a college tour we had our guide trek us through the PILLAR Rocks to the pine forest, both being different attraction never knew it was connected and had a lovely walk.

The regular and known spots like

  • The Bryant Park
  • Observatory
  • Suicide point
  • Green Valley
  • Dolphin Nose
  • Silver falls
  • one more view point near Silver falls(forgot the name, but really good one)
  • Pine Forest

  1. From Madurai start early in the morning to avoid traffic and you can reach in roughly 1.5 hrs in a cab. Usually guys prefer bike.
  2. If using a Train ,get down at KODAI ROAD stop after DINDIGUL and then take a cab of travel to Vathalagundu and then lots of bus and cab available there.

3.There is also a Palani route

4.Munnar route to reach Kodaikannal.

All the good hotels and resorts have branches so no worry a decent room will be available. My choice will be take a room in the Valley(little further from the Kodai town, less crowded). I really loved the Sterling Resorts Valley point view. Lovely place it was.

Usually if it is for just sight seeing one or two days are enough, incase planning on spending time with family and friends lovely escape it is.

What to wear:

It is really pleasant and during Apr -May it is warm during day. A small cover up is fine but while travelling have your ears covered. During the coldest month Jan it is 8 degrees -17 degrees and warmest is 12-20.

Best Time of the Year:

All around the year I would say. Not much of landslides like ooty or Munnar so can very well opt even if it rains. In Summer it is busy i.e April and May many flower shows and lots of activities. Oct-Nov is too a good season as the climate is at its best.

Beware of:

Those vicious monkeys and wild dogs. One snached the bread ommelete got from my friend and one robbed the water bottle.

Yes leeches as it would be in any hill station.

No big animals like elephant or tiger spotted that easily as in Munnar.

Everyone can enjoy ,even elderly people . Not much of altitude or chillness .

Kids need to be protected by ear , easily can catch cold.

If you are person who have altitude sickness think twice, the road is steep and has many bends.

The last two times I went had difficulty while coming down,so much of traffic.

Kodaikanal has grown bigger and populated in the years.Yes the road is really good and well maintained but lots of traffic.

So prefer early morning ascending and descending. Evenings are too busy.

1.The cycling around the lake, really wonderful and peaceful

2.Of course the Boating. It closes by 5 PM so finish boating in earlier part of the day.

3.Try those hot MOLAGA(Chili )Bhajji’s

4.Home made Chocolate and Marshmallows are delicious.

5.Dry Flowers are really awesome.

Will I go again:

Yes of course, each time I discover something new.
