Prawn Thokku or Shrimp Curry is the most favourite recipe of my house. Anyone who loves to try prawn for the first time, this would be perfect.
I learnt this Prawn Thokku out on my own, and kind of recreated in my own style. Infact my husband who hates Prawns before, started to get obsessed with it now. Its simple and easy ,cooks within minutes.
Things required :
1.Prawns – 1/2 Kg
2.Tomatoes – 5 big ripe ones
3.Big Jeera – 1 teaspoon
4.Onions – 1 or 2 chopped finely
6.Garlic – 6 cloves
7.Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
10.Salt to taste
11.Turmeric powder -1 teaspoon(optional)
12.Chilli Powder – 1 tablespoon
13. Pepper Powder -1/2 teaspoon
14. any masala(ready made ones -optional)
15. Coconut/ Sesame Oil as required.
16.Chilli – if required(dry or green)
Step 1: Tomato Puree :
Blend the tomatoes and jeera together in the blender into a fine paste.
Clean out the prawn wash, at salt and turmeric wash it nicely. Adding good amount of turmeric in seafood often kills any bacteria at the same time stops the foul smell.
In a pan add oil heat it well, after that add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add Ginger and Garlic let it cook , then add Onion. To get the onion cook fast add salt it cooks faster than usual.
Then add the tomato puree, let it boil while you add chilli powder and pepper powder ,salt to taste. This dish is less spicy.
Now add the prawns, if you find the mixture too thick add little water.
Let the Prawn cook and the mixture simmer.
Step 7:Add extra Oil at last to give that a wow taste.
It goes well with Dosa, Idli and also rice. Mine here I added water and made like curry. You can stop it before that and use it as a semi -gravy.
If you like Coconut , then you could add coconut milk at the last or cook in coconut oil.
