Terracotta jewellery is the talk of the town. Did you know that Terracotta is not available in most part of the world(that includes US).
Here comes our saviour Polymer Clay.
” Polymer clay – A brilliant substitute, better in fact, as it is light and water-resistant too” says Janu Arjun, a young Fashion Designer who is now in Cleveland, Ohio .She also designs, makes and sells her Statement Jewellery to OKW, a boutique in Boston.
A short story on how it began
Janu being a Fashion Designer has designed many outfits. She moved to the United States along with her Husband Arjun. In United States,Terracotta was not easily available and then she started to experiment on Polymer Clay.
Polymer Clay turned out to be a perfect substitute for Terracotta. She single-handedly designs, makes and sells these beautiful ethnic statement jewellery to boutiques and on request she also does a lot of custom designing.
She does Warli painting on tote and purses.
She can also paint walls with her designs on request.
One can get beautiful handmade necklace and earrings from her. She can also vary it as per the Client’s need. One could notice that beautiful blend of both the ethnic and western design and that is where her Jewellery stands out.
Each of her designs go through a complete and hard manual labour.
Janu’s thought on Creativity
“There are many people who have a creative side to them. Some of them don’t take it seriously or don’t spend time with. Well, You might be a software person, a doctor, a teacher or in any other field, but taking some time to unleash your creative side.It is not only discovering a piece of you but also a great stress buster. Most people do not take the initiative or the effort as the only thing they want to do on a weekend is sit in front of the television or hang out with friends. They are quite good at convincing themselves that they do not have any time. Given a chance, they might surprise themselves.”
Being situated in Cleveland,Ohio ,United States I truly believe her designs would be a massive hit worn by all Indians. Given a chance and opportunity her fusion jewellery will be creating a buzz even in the Western World.
When asked about her support she immediately says,
“A complete cliche, but yes my husband has been my backbone. It was initially difficult to get a job in fashion as I had no education from the US. All my experience and degrees from India did not count here and I was back at square one. When I was out looking for fashion jobs and did not even think of giving my flair for the arts a chance, he was the one who helped me get back to paints and brushes. One thing led to another and I am here today selling my clay jewelry to a boutique in a beautiful city like Boston.”
